Diabetes Weight Loss Diet – If you or a loved one has diabetes, that doesn’t mean dinner is a snack. But it is important to be careful in choosing a diet, and some foods for diabetes remain in the store.

Amy Kranick, RD, LDN, CDE of Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers some additional information on the best choices of vegetables, proteins, and fruits for diabetics and why it’s important to choose wisely when you’re on a diabetes diet.

“It’s important to ‘know’ what diabetes-healthy foods are and aren’t good choices when trying to lose weight, exercise, and manage diabetes,” Kranik says.

What foods are good for diabetes? First of all, protein can help you manage your weight and prevent unwanted weight gain, Kranik says, because it helps you feel full.

“Good sources of protein are seafood, white poultry such as turkey and chicken, and lean beef. Dairy products are good sources of protein, which also provide vitamin D and calcium. Beans (peas), pork tenderloin, and soy protein (approx. 50 grams) are good for lowering cholesterol and a healthy diet. And can be sustained,” he said.

To avoid protein, Kranick says to avoid fatty meats such as roasts, dark meats, pork, sausages, and fried meats.

Because fruits are a source of carbohydrates, large amounts can be problematic when trying to manage diabetes. However, Kranick said fruit is not bad and should be eaten in one piece.

“Bananas have the highest carbohydrate content of any fruit, and berries have the lowest,” he says.

For a diabetic diet, vegetables can be your new best friend. Kranick said to stock up on all types, colors, and vegetables for varied nutritional content.

“Learn to cook vegetables. Roasted vegetables with olive oil are always a good team. Try roasting vegetables. Be innovative, and remember, starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas, and corn are higher in carbs than leafy greens, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, and spinach,” Kranick says.

“Yes, sweet potatoes are very high in fiber and nutrients, which help maintain blood sugar compared to white potatoes, which are not ideal for diabetes,” he said.

So, what foods are forbidden for diabetics? For sweets, Cranick advises not to cut back on what we love and focus on moderation, the key word.

“Choose these in small amounts and try to choose the ones you like over the sweets you don’t like. It’s all about moderation, and avoid sweetened tea or sugar, lemonade, and regular soda,” Kranick said.

“If you can eliminate sugary drinks from your diet, that would be my first piece of advice. Beverages are one of the hardest things to manage with diabetes. Where do you start? This comprehensive guide takes the guesswork out of it, helping you create a diet plan that’s sustainable diabetes and improving health.

According to the American Diabetes Association’s 2019 Nutrition Guidelines, there are many ways to create a healthy diabetes meal plan, but “there is growing evidence to show that low-carb diets can benefit people with diabetes and prediabetes.”

Of course, no diet plan works for everyone. You may have special dietary needs or food allergies that need to be taken into account or enjoy different foods than those covered in this plan. If so, use this plan as a starting point and replace foods that aren’t good for you with the same macronutrients.

We all have different calorie needs. Your daily calorie requirements depend on your size, fitness level, daily activity, gender, etc.

When you create a healthy diabetes meal plan, your first step is to calculate your “calorie balance,” or the number of calories you need each day to maintain your current weight.

You can learn exactly how to find your calorie balance in 5 simple steps in this post: “How to Find Your Daily Calorie Need”.

Does Keto Diet Help Type 2 Diabetes?

Once you know your calorie balance, you can increase or decrease daily calories to reach your goal. If the goal is to lose weight, I recommend eating less than 500 calories per day (but no less than 1,200 per day). This should lead to a stable and healthy weight.

If you want to build more muscle mass (or gain weight in general), start by eating 300-500 calories more than your daily allowance and see what happens. If you find yourself gaining a little fat, cut back on your calories.

This is a 1600 calorie meal plan that you can adjust to your preferred daily calorie count.

The meal plan has 3 main meals and 2 snacks per day, and details the number of calories and carbohydrates in each meal and snack.

If you want to adjust calories, start by adding or eliminating snacks. If it’s not enough to reach your calorie goal, adjust the portion size of one or more staple foods.

Vegetables are included in a separate row for each day, but it is recommended to split them so that you can eat some vegetables at each main meal (or at least lunch and dinner). It is good to eat vegetables daily to prevent hunger.

Vegetables on this plan mean low-carb vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and cucumber. Not carbs like beans and potatoes. At the end of this post you will find a list of good low carb vegetables.

You can download a daily summary of your meal plan here, print it out and hang it on the fridge (or keep it on your computer or phone) so you know what to eat next.
