Can I remember seeing a giant mouth and taking turns brushing my teeth. I can even picture the dentist who came to talk to us in first grade. And I’m pretty sure I can remember most of the words to our dental health song
I think I miss these dental health activities because my teacher took the time to plan activities that were meaningful, fun, and hands on for us. Since February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, it’s the perfect time to help you plan to incorporate dental health activities for your students. I’ve put together a list of six different things you can add to your lessons, including a freebie at the end!

Reading science aloud is a wonderful way to incorporate science into your day. Build background information for your readers before introducing a new topic. They can provide visual resources for your ELL students to be more successful. Reading aloud Science can easily engage students and start conversations about new vocabulary. Descriptive Analysis Of Dental X Ray Images Using Various Practical Methods: A Review [peerj]
The book follows the little critter as he goes to the dentist for a cleaning and an x-ray. Then, you have a hole and you need it filled. Your students will love learning about what a visit to the dentist’s office would be like through the eyes of a little critic.
This book is a quick read that starts with a silly story told by a child, then goes to the dentist teaching children about teeth, oral anatomy, types of teeth and how to care for them. It teaches everything. It is an easy to read and informative picture book.

Career Exploration Implementation
One of my favorite things about dental health is inviting a real dentist or hygienist from our school to talk to us about dental health and visit the dentist. Many dental offices in our area have ready-made presentations with various props and models that come with them. You can also ask parents in your class or grade and see if any of them have experience in this area.
The best way to teach all about dental health is through science, reading and writing. That’s what the Dental Hygienist does! It is full of purpose and purposeful dental health activities. It has everything you and your students need in one place.
It starts with a detailed lesson planning guide to make lesson planning easy. There are also posters, graphic organizers, vocabulary cards, cut and paste activities, and educational activities for editing. It also has science tests, anchor charts, and unit tests.
Finally, the Dental Health Resource has reading and writing components such as a 5-day lesson plan, a mini-book, phonics activities, and a reading poem that are shared with writing skills.

If you already have a good dental health career, but want something more, shared learning is the way to go! In this 15 minute period, you can teach your readers and writers many powerful short lessons to move them forward. Additionally, you can combine your science and social studies topics to give your students more practice with important vocabulary.
February’s Shared Reading consists of four weeks of poetry, including a week about dental health. There are two student versions of each week’s poem, two phonics activities, a whole-group pocketbook, and a five-day teaching plan.
