Dental Care Com Continuing Education – The Dental Hygiene Division at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque is committed to improving and enhancing oral health care through education, research, and patient care. The department is committed to providing continuing dental education (CDE) to train dentists, hygienists, dental hygienists, dental technicians and dental assistants. To enable them to maintain and continuously develop their knowledge and skills during their working life.
CDE programs range from clinical and laboratory studies to formal meetings with internationally recognized speakers. The CDE focuses its efforts on educating New Mexicans. But encourages participation at the national and international levels. The goals of the program are:

The goal is to increase the availability and access of dental care in the community and across the state.
The college aims to double the number of participants enrolled in the Extended Functions for Dental Assistants (EFDA) continuing education program, which trains dentists and dental hygienists to perform procedures. Few episodes currently performed by licensed dentist
The college is working to increase enrollment to a maximum of 210 students in the EFDA Rehabilitation program and 40 students in the EFDA Prosthetics program beginning January 1, 2020.

Assistance is needed to meet the dental needs of the community. The EFDA program is one answer to the need for help in these disadvantaged areas. We soon saw that the situation was beyond the capacity of local dentists to cope with this growing population.”

According to Dr. McKinney, general dentists primarily do fillings and crowns. And alone can take many steps in a day. Training more members of the dental team to perform these procedures would have a significant impact on the number of patients treated.

It will reduce wait times for students admitted to our program.” “Our goal is to provide continuing education activities that address the state’s strategic dental healthcare needs accomplish and improve participants’ ability to improve direct patient care.”
The reception of the increased enrollment in the two courses by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry was very positive. The Tennessee Institute of General Dentistry, according to the Tennessee Dental Association and colleges of dentistry and dentistry throughout the state.
“With an increasing number of students we will be certifying in a year’s time. The program will have a profound impact on the number of dental offices in the state that can provide these services,” said Dr. McKinney. This is a great way to help meet the dental needs of Tennesseeans.”
