Meal planning can be as basic as writing down your favorite meals and snacks. Most of my favorite foods are the easiest to make. Unless you love to cook, spending time preparing a complicated meal will make you want to eat more than just plain food.

Keeping track of what you eat can be a very useful tool. It does NOT have to be something you do forever – even just checking in for a few days can be an eye-opening experience. If you keep a diary of what you eat, you will see where most of the calories come from. That way you will see what is right for you.

If pen and paper aren’t your style, use an app. I like the Lose It app (as opposed to My Fitness Pal) because there are fewer meals, which means less confusion when trying to pick up a chicken.

This is where monitoring your diet really helps. I recommend monitoring your food intake for 3-5 days (no restrictions!) That way, your new calorie goal will be in line with your metabolism, and will be achievable in the long run (there is no point stick to a 1200 calorie per day diet without going back to your “normal” eating pattern” later, and put the weight back on, right?)
